12 {Free} Preschool + Kindergarten Springtime Study Units + Activities

I really enjoy basing our curriculum around what's going on in our own personal lives.

One of my main goals in homeschooling is teaching my child how to take care of himself and the world around him.

Spring time means planting season for us. We'll be planting a much larger garden this year, and I really want to base many of our "science" projects and learning on planting season and the things that happen during the Spring and Summer months.

Of course, you know me, I love FREE things! So I've decided to put together some free unit studies and activities that I've found online this morning. We may not do all of these, or may wait to do some in the fall, but I wanted to share them with you either way, just in case there's something that you like for your own personal curriculum....

Many of these freebies are geared towards preschool and kindergartners. Please keep in mind that each child learns on a different level and at a different pace. Not all children will know how to do these unit studies, while others may be too advanced for them. It all depends on what curriculum you've been teaching in Preschool and Kindergarten, and on your child's learn abilities.

Also, these studies aren't just for homeschoolers. Public school children love these as well, and they are great little projects that you can do at home with your child to help them refresh what they've learned at school, to help them expand their learning, or to just have that one on one time that your child may not receive in a public school setting.

**Please click on each link below to see previews of each curriculum. Do not simply go by the title and description. I have added a "my notes" section to some of these that I felt the need to comment on.**

Plants, Science and Literacy
My Notes: This is a GREAT worksheet activity if your children have already started writing (not reading, writing). This will help them learn to put words together and to write words on their own simply by "copying" what is already written. Be patient until they get the hang of it, it will take a little while.
This mini unit on plants is great fun!
*A plant observation log
*plant labeling
*"how to" writing (grow a plant)
*sentence writing

My Plant Words Vocabulary Booklet
My Notes: In the description, this has students already writing sentences. However, this booklet can be used for preschoolers and kindergartners. Simply have your child read the word (sight word), tell you the letters and their sounds, put the sounds together and then write the word.
My Plant Words provides your students a place to document all those new words learned while studying plants. Students complete each page as we cover the new word. They are expected to write a few sentences using the word in context. A simple, "I like flowers" is not accepted.
This booklet includes 11 topic words. The pages are formatted for you to use only the words you like.

My Parts of a Plant Math Book for Numbers 26-30
This book integrates four different kindergarten curricula. First, it focuses on numbers 26-30. You have to trace each number, write each number, do the ten frames. Next it also integrates plants, and the life cycle of plants. It can also include types of weather (this is optional). You can discuss what type of weather is happening on each page and what it would do to the plants. Last, it integrates writing. At the end of the page the students have to write a sentence about that page.
Example:
On the page for number 27, you would trace 27, write 27, make 27 dots in the ten frame, made 27 again, draw 27 roots. There are already 4 seeds so they just draw the roots coming out of the seeds, then they would color their picture, including the sun, etc. Then they would write a sentence about. Usually my students write something like: I have 27 roots.

Blooming with Teens
My notes: My little guy loves these number puzzles. Laminate these for use every year or for siblings that will be doing the same curriculum a following year.
Students practice putting teen numbers 12-19 in order while building a picture of a plant.
Students cut apart strips and then place numbers in order, gluing the completed picture on another piece of paper.
This can be done in small groups, independent activity, or as a center.

As you may have noticed, all of these freebies have come from
www.teacherspayteachers.com. Teachers Pay Teachers is a really great site for FREE worksheet and unit studies, however, there are a lot of excellent units on there that you do have to pay for. If you are a homeschooling family, I highly recommend this website for worksheet and study needs. It's great when I'm in a bind and can't figure out what I want to do for extra curricula, or if I have something that just pops in my head that I'd like to teach my little one about, but don't have time (or the money) to order an actual accredited unit study on it.

And, besides, who needs to pay $100+ on one unit study anyhow, especially when there are all of these excellent freebies online!!

If you've created a springtime curriculum or unit study, please feel free to post it in the comments below!

Enjoy!

Happy Spring!
